Journey into Unschooling

Pancake Day!

February 24th, 2009 by becki

Today I went to visit the nursery that we put Alfie’s name down for 18 months ago. It looked fine – caring staff, lots of activities, great outdoor play area – but did nothing to sway my conviction that he’s best off here with us. There are so many home ed meetings/art sessions/soft play etc etc going on round here that he’d get to interact with lots of children. Children of all ages too, not just 25 others who happened to be born within a few months of him. I’ve always felt that HE was the way forward, but became convinced when I saw the amount of support and activity there is around here with other HE families. Alfie is adamant he doesn’t want to go to nursery and, to be honest, I can’t see anything that he’d get from it that he doesn’t/wouldn’t get anyway.

I left the kids in the library with their dad whilst I went to the nursery. He looked very harried indeed when I got back, even though I hadn’t been gone an hour, so I treated us all to coffee and cake before he went back to work. To be fair, Holly is teething and needed Nurofen today, so she has been very grumpy. I also popped into the health store and the cake shop to order Alfie’s birthday cake – a 3D Percy!

After great difficulty in getting Holly to sleep, I managed to cuddle her on my lap then slide her across onto the sofa whilst she slept so that I could help Alfie to make his cork lady! I’ll try and post a pic of the work in progress when Rich shows me how! He already made a champagne cork man with Daddy, so today we made the lady with another champagne cork. My kitchen is covered in glitter from her Disco dress ;-) We also made pancake batter (Alfie loves using the electric mixer lol!) and had lots of yummy pancakes for dinner :)

I’m just deciding where to go tomorrow – maybe Conkers? Alfie and Holly love the train and the walks, plus the discovery centre has loads to do and climb. I’m just wondering if I can be bothered to make a picnic LOL!
